Blacksburg Band Boosters supports musical education at Blacksburg Middle School and High School through fundraising and volunteer work.

The Blacksburg Community Band was founded in 1989 to give local musicians a way to rekindle, maintain or improve their musical proficiency in a large ensemble – in 2026 we have well over 100 musicians! There are no dues or fees to join and musicians are never paid, so all donations raised are crucial to cover the cost of music, band-owned instruments and operating expenses. We rehearse weekly and perform free public concerts throughout the year to share our love of music with the New River Valley community!

The Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry’s mission is to provide food assistance and compassionate support to individuals and families facing food insecurity in the greater Blacksburg and McCoy areas by partnering with volunteers and the community to distribute nutritious food and help address the root causes of hunger.

The Blacksburg Junior Women’s Club was formed in November 1935 by a small group of local women who wanted to give back to their community as well as strengthen social ties. The group originally had 13 members. The club became a member of the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs in February 1936. The stated object of the organization was to “unite all loyal and progressive citizens in an intelligent effort toward a better Blacksburg, to promote good citizenship, public health, general culture and civic ideals.” The current mission of the organization is to promote the cultural, educational and environmental welfare of the region through service projects, outreach, and other charitable activities. The GFWC/BJWC is a member of both the Virginia Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs and as such will align its objectives with the objectives of these organizations. Today, the club has 17 members and supports a variety of projects. Annually, the club sponsors two in-kind drives. In the fall we support the Montgomery County Christmas Store (MCCS) and collect diapers, pull-ups and wipes from the club and community. In 2025 the Diaper Drive was able to supply 30,001 products to MCCS. The supplies have gone to eligible families during shopping week in December since 2012. In the spring we have started a Period Product Drive. Over the past two years we have been able to collect 30,057 tampons, pads and liners. These products are then used to pack take-home bags for middle school and high school students in MCPS. To date we have supplied 960 bags. The remaining products are distributed amongst the schools as well as local food pantries. Each year the club also awards scholarships to graduating high school senior women who demonstrate strong participation in local community service activities as well as high academic achievement and school participation. Some of our other favorite projects we support include: Last Minute Angels - Members work with the Salvation Army to sponsor children and seniors from its angel tree. The club purchases gifts for the kids along with a jacket, hat and mittens. Seniors receive their requested items including hygiene products, local gift cards and activities such as crosswords and puzzles. To Our House: Members donate lunch supplies and cook meals for the winter shelter for homeless adults. This past Thanksgiving we provided sides for dinner as well as a special breakfast spread. Cornerstone Project - Cornerstone apartment complex is run by the Women's Resource Center for women and children escaping domestic violence. Twice a year BJWC "adopts" an apartment and gets it ready for a family to move into, since they are unable to bring much at all with them.

Blacksburg Refugee Partnership (BRP), founded in 2016, supports refugee resettlement in Blacksburg, welcoming more than 20 families from more than 6 countries like Afghanistan and Syria. BRP offers assistance with housing, education, employment, healthcare, financial literacy and cultural orientation. Its goal is to empower refugees to achieve long-term independence while enriching the local community. Volunteers, vital to its mission, undergo training and background checks. Funding comes from grants and donations.

Agape Center NRV is an outreach center staffed entirely by volunteers from multiple churches. Through mentorship, it serves people in the New River Valley when they need a hand up. We provide food, diapers, clothing, hygiene products, housewares, small appliances, small furniture items, and, most recently, firewood, all free of charge to our neighbors in need. Agape Center NRV is USDA certified and provides standard USDA food to those who qualify, as well as USDA senior boxes to those over age 60.

The Blacksburg Volunteer Rescue Squad provides prehospital emergency medical and technical rescue services for the Town of Blacksburg, Montgomery County, the surrounding region, and communities across Virginia.

Blue Ridge Vocal Connection connects people with their innate ability to sing in an affirming environment and brings Blue Ridge communities together through performances in a variety of venues.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Virginia (BGCSWVA) is a Roanoke-based nonprofit, founded in 1997, that provides affordable after-school and summer programs for youth across Roanoke City/County, Salem, Montgomery County, and Franklin County.

The Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is a national organization that connects parents, educators, and students to collaborate on school activities and initiatives. For the 2026–2027 school year, the Christiansburg High School (CHS) PTSA is focused on expanding student involvement and supporting the school community. Key Initiatives & Programs Event Sponsorship: Sponsoring the Homecoming parade and dance, as well as providing a safe, chaperoned After Prom party. Student Participation: Hosting quarterly PTSA club days where students plan upcoming events, show appreciation to teachers and staff with treats, and help run community events like the school trunk-or-treat. Care Closet Support: Supporting an on-site Care Closet that supplies emergency clothing and hygiene items so students can remain at school comfortably throughout the day. Senior Scholarships: Offering college scholarship opportunities to graduating seniors who have actively participated in the PTSA throughout their four years at CHS. Operations & Funding 100% run by parent volunteers. Funded through donations from parents and local businesses, alongside ticket sales from the Homecoming dance.

Feeding Southwest Virginia is a partner food bank of Feeding America. For the last four decades, the mission of Feeding SWVA has been to nourish neighbors, engage community partners, and develop solutions to address food insecurity. Each year, the Food Bank secures and distributes over 20 million pounds of food to nourish the 1 in 7 of our neighbors who live with hunger in Southwest Virginia. To better serve our communities, Feeding SWVA supports 275 Agency Partners who operate over 350 meal programs throughout our 26-county and nine-city service region.

With locations in Blacksburg and Pulaski, we are dedicated to providing the citizens of the New River Valley with a full range of arts programming, including art education classes for children and adults; rotating exhibits, artist opportunities, a gift shop at each location showcasing handmade work by local artists, and concerts and festivals that contribute to the cultural richness of the region.

Flying Changes VA provides equine-assisted services for individuals, families, groups, and organizations, with a focus on mental health, well-being, and self-sufficiency while building strong support systems.

Hacksburg is a community workshop located in Blacksburg, Virginia. Through instructional classes and weekly work sessions, we aim to help members of the NRV community complete projects that would otherwise be out of reach.

Established in Blacksburg in the late 1940s, Hillel at Virginia Tech is the heart and home of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University’s 2,000 Jewish undergraduate and graduate students. In the spirit of Virginia Tech’s Principles of Community, we affirm the inherent dignity and value of every student, regardless of their age, color, ability, gender, political affiliation, race, or sexual orientation.

Historic Smithfield preserves the 1774 manor house of Colonel William Preston, militia commander and one of the most powerful figures in Revolutionary-era Southwest Virginia. Located adjacent to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, the site interprets the complex history of the New River Valley during the American Revolution — a period when neighbors divided between Patriot and Loyalist allegiances, and the outcomes of local conflicts shaped the future of the frontier. Visitors can tour the beautifully preserved Georgian architecture, explore collections documenting the Preston family and the enslaved community that sustained the plantation, and participate in educational programs that bring 18th-century history to life. Through partnerships with Virginia Tech, local organizations, and descendant communities, Historic Smithfield serves as both a museum and a center for ongoing research, dialogue, and discovery about freedom, conflict, and the Revolutionary experience in Appalachia.

Hope to Walk provides low-cost prosthetic legs to amputees in developing countries who could never afford one otherwise. Not only does this give the gift of walking, but also hope for a new life of dignity and independence, where they can care for their family instead of being cared for by their family. Most of the legs are provided free. Hope to Walk treats amputees in Guatemala, Honduras, Tanzania, Dominican Republic, and St. Lucia in the Caribbean.

As the local partner to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, we enroll children under the age of five to receive free, high-quality books in the mail each month until they turn five. We have had over 52,000 books mailed in our 2½ years of existence and have reached over 3,000 children. Parents and children love the books! Currently, over 60% of the children in the County are enrolled, but we want to reach so many more.

Inmate Family Assistance of the NRV helps families with loved ones incarcerated in the Montgomery County Jail by assisting them with funds for their loved ones' telephone and commissary accounts so that they may stay in touch.

Intellectual Disabilities Agency of the New River Valley is a private, nonprofit, community-based agency offering social, educational and recreational activities for children, youth, and adults with intellectual disabilities. Opportunities to achieve increased self-esteem and confidence, exercise, and practice appropriate social skills in the community are just a few examples of benefits offered through IDA programming and activities. In addition, we offer much-needed respite to families and caregivers as IDA provides a safe and accepting environment for everyone.

Our goal is to enhance our students' school experience by hosting fun events and literacy opportunities and advocating for our students, teachers, and families. Many of our events, including Fall Festival, International Night, game nights, and the school dance, are also open to caregivers, siblings, and grandparents, encouraging participation and connection among Kipps families.

Last Call Animal Foundation is a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Pembroke, VA. Founded in 2024 by a group of former servers and bartenders, we saw an opportunity to create real purpose in a space that brings people together. Since then, we've partnered with shelters and rescues across Southwest Virginia to help cover the costs that often go unmet: food, medical care, spay/neuter programs, shelter supplies, and everyday essentials for animals who don't have anyone else advocating for them. Every event we host puts money directly into the hands of the organizations doing that work.

At Literacy NRV, we are dedicated to fostering, supporting, advocating for, and instructing adults in the New River Valley of Virginia who seek opportunities to achieve greater independence through literacy. Our team is comprised of passionate and experienced individuals who are committed to making a difference in our community. We believe that literacy is the foundation for success in all areas of life, and we strive to provide our students with the tools and resources they need to succeed.

Little Big Dog Rescue is the little rescue with the BIG heart. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue committed to improving and saving the lives of dogs through rescue, rehabilitation, training, adoption, and community education.

Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program (MCEAP) was founded in 1975 as a 100% volunteer organization to meet the immediate, emergency, and temporary needs of low-income, unemployed, elderly, and handicapped individuals and families. MCEAP helps these families in the areas of food, clothing, household items, and financial assistance where existing agencies cannot do so.

Education is a cornerstone of a thriving community and is imperative to maintaining the successes of Montgomery County’s economic development. The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce Foundation is dedicated to fostering educational opportunities that empower students, support educators, and cultivate future leaders. Initiatives include a donation to the ACCE program, the Teacher of the Year cash award, Job Shadow Day program in MCPS, the Mary T. Tutle Scholarship, Junior Achievement, the Sharon Scott Leadership & Business Endowment, Signing Day, Women’s Leadership Conference scholarships, and more across Montgomery County. The Chamber formed a 501(c)(3) Charitable Foundation in 2012 whose mission is to provide support for the charitable, educational, and scientific undertakings of the Chamber.

Founded in 1982, the Montgomery County Christmas Store (MCCS) is a nondenominational, all-volunteer, community-wide nonprofit organization that assists eligible low-income individuals and families in Montgomery County during the holiday season by providing a shopping experience characterized by choice and dignity. Shoppers may select new clothing, consumable goods, new toys, books, and food. The MCCS relies on the assistance of more than 1,000 volunteers each year and serves more than 1,500 families plus senior citizens throughout our community.

MCFACC is dedicated to improving and saving the lives of homeless animals in Montgomery County, Virginia. Our mission is to help the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center by providing financial support for: medications, surgeries, animal enrichment, microchips, and dog training. MCFACC also supports the Montgomery County community in several ways. We sponsor senior animal adoptions, hold free vaccination clinics, and proudly offer Spay/Neuter Voucher, TNR and Dog Training programs. The Montgomery Museum of Art & History was founded in 1983 to preserve history and present art representative of Montgomery County, the New River Valley, and the broader Appalachian region. The Museum fulfills this mission by providing research materials (over 16,000 archival items and historic photographs), developing history exhibitions, exhibiting the work of regional artists, maintaining a native and pollinator garden with outdoor art and interpretative displays, and engaging the community through artist classes, programs, and events. Formerly housed in a historic manse (c.1854) with approximately 2,600 square feet of space, the Museum seized a rare opportunity in 2021 and bought a historic bank building. Located on Town Square within the Christiansburg Downtown National Register Historic District, the new building encompasses 15,000 square feet. In the first three years following relocation, visitation increased over 400%, the operating budget grew by 88.5%, and the Museum received numerous awards, including the Dominion Energy ArtStars Award and Outstanding Community Preservation Award from Preservation Virginia.

New River Community Action's To Our House (TOH) is a low-barrier program which includes 14 beds that provide shelter, food, and compassionate support to unhoused guests during the winter months (November to March). TOH partners with 30 churches to provide shelter space, hot meals, and volunteers who serve dinner and offer fellowship at a host facility. Evening activities have included haircuts, health checks, and screenings for other programs. Breakfast and bag lunches are available in the morning. TOH staff offer case management to help guests move toward self-sufficiency and housing stability.

Homeless families with children in the New River Valley are eligible for New River Family Shelter case management services, and, as space is available, emergency shelter. Families are assisted with addressing their housing barriers to be able to locate and maintain permanent housing.

The Monday Night Supper mission of Northside Presbyterian Church provides take-out meals every Monday night to any person or family who pulls into the parking lot. There are no requirements and no questions asked. We have regulars and one-time visitors. We consider all who come as our "Monday Night Congregation."

NRV CARES is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting children, preventing child abuse, and strengthening families in the New River Valley. Our mission is to protect children and strengthen families with our vision of a resilient New River Valley free of child abuse and neglect.

The Paintball Club at Virginia Tech is committed to fostering, developing, and introducing the student population to competitive college paintball. From recreational paintball to X-ball, our mission is to introduce Virginia Tech students to the exhilarating world of paintball and ignite a passion for the sport. We strive to cultivate a competitive, tight-knit team environment that empowers our members to learn, grow, and excel in paintball.

The Price's Fork Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a volunteer-led group dedicated to supporting our students, teachers, and school community. Through fundraising, family engagement, and school programs, we work to provide additional resources and opportunities that enrich the educational experience for all students.

Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) provides free volunteer-built twin beds (with a new mattress, bedding, and a pillow) to children in need. SHP promotes a purposeful community of action by supplying the means and supervision for local organizations and individual volunteers to fund, build, deliver, and assemble the beds. Since August of 2020 the New River Chapter of SHP has delivered 1,735+ beds to kids in the surrounding 3 counties. We're striving hard to make sure "No Kid Sleeps On The Floor In Our Town" but recognize there's still much work to be done so we'll keep conducting Bed Build Events and putting new beds under kids in our towns.

Sustainable Blacksburg is an all-volunteer community organization dedicated to environmental stewardship, with a mission to preserve and enhance sustainable living in Blacksburg and the surrounding area.

The Lyric Theatre is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization overseen by The Lyric Council Board of Directors. The Lyric Council was first formed in 1995 with the goal of restoring the 1930 Lyric Theatre and is now the governing body of The Lyric. The Board of Directors consists of members, elected by Lyric members annually, who serve for three-year terms. All Lyric members are invited to nominate and vote for new Board members at the council’s annual meeting, usually held in February. Board members meet monthly to discuss the Theatre’s financial reports, programs, and other theatre business. The mission of The Lyric Council is to enhance community participation in the arts and culture by: + maintaining and preserving the historic Lyric Theatre building while sustaining state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure, + providing a diversity of arts programming to the community, + establishing and promoting The Lyric Theatre as a regional arts destination, and + partnering with community organizations.

The Mayapple School is a nature-based preschool and summer camp located in Blacksburg, Virginia. The Mayapple School nurtures creativity, curiosity, and a deep connection with the world around us through direct, hands-on programming.

Vittles for Vets serves low-income veterans experiencing food insecurity by providing access to nutritious food through our grocery gift card program.

At Volunteer Montgomery, we believe there is always an opportunity to make a difference. The prize money would allow Volunteer Montgomery to build upon our existing volunteer efforts, expand our partnerships with local nonprofits, and reach even more individuals who want to make a meaningful difference throughout the New River Valley.

The Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley Inc. is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide free, 24/7 comprehensive programs and services to victims of sexual and domestic violence in the New River Valley region of Virginia.

The YMCA at Virginia Tech strengthens the New River Valley by cultivating student leaders and driving meaningful community impact through service, education, and civic engagement. Building on more than 150 years of history, the organization connects Virginia Tech students with opportunities to address community needs while developing leadership skills and a lifelong commitment to service. Its work focuses on expanding food access, supporting youth and families, promoting sustainability, reducing social isolation, fostering community connections, and welcoming international residents and newcomers. Through student-led initiatives and strong community partnerships, the YMCA at Virginia Tech creates lasting benefits for both participants and the broader region while preparing the next generation of leaders dedicated to positive social change.

We are a nonprofit Christian organization that introduces adolescents to Jesus Christ and helps them grow in their faith. Our full-time staff and volunteer leaders, who are mostly Virginia Tech students, visit schools across the New River Valley to meet and build relationships with high school and middle school students. We host weekly events, including club, a party filled with organized chaos that ends with a brief message about Jesus. These events show students that they can have fun in a positive environment. We also offer Bible studies for students who want to learn more and deepen their understanding of the Bible. We partner with the community to help make it a better place for students, families, and adults. Community support makes our work possible, and we want to help one another for the greater good.

Project Linus provides comfort to children experiencing difficult circumstances by giving them handmade blankets, quilts, and afghans of their own. Whether a child is facing a serious illness, recovering from an injury, coping with abuse, or navigating another challenging life event, each blanket is a tangible reminder that someone cares. Serving Montgomery, Floyd, Giles, and Pulaski counties and the City of Radford, the New River Valley-Radford Project Linus chapter has distributed more than 51,000 blankets since June 2000. Our caring volunteer "Blanketeers" generously share their time and talents to create these handmade gifts, helping bring comfort, security, and smiles to children across our community.

The Hokie Way, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing charitable initiatives and strengthening communities across Virginia. Through partnerships with local and regional nonprofit organizations, The Hokie Way helps raise awareness, generate support, and expand the impact of important causes that serve individuals, families, and communities in need. In the spirit of service, The Hokie Way creates meaningful impact by engaging Virginia Tech student-athletes as ambassadors in support of those charitable objectives. Their involvement helps nonprofit partners reach broader audiences, increase community engagement, and deepen their impact throughout the Commonwealth.

Habitat for Humanity of the New River Valley (Habitat NRV) works to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership and home repair opportunities. Serving communities throughout the New River Valley, Habitat NRV partners with individuals, families, volunteers, donors, and community organizations to help create safe, affordable housing and improve existing homes. Through these partnerships, Habitat NRV helps create stronger communities where everyone has a decent place to live.

Live, Work, Eat, Grow is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving the NRV through its shared-use commercial kitchen, four community gardens and a variety of educational programs. They operate a prepared meal program serving homemade, healthy meals to local food banks and most recently launched the NRV Food and Farm Guide.

We are local employees, parents, and students who volunteer our time and energy to promote STEM in the New River Valley. We are truly excited about robotics and the cool things that happen when young students see what a difference science, technology, engineering, and math can make! The long-term goal is to increase the number of STEM-educated future employees who will make the NRV their home and excel at teamwork, technology, and communication.

United Way of Southwest Virginia fights for the health, education, and financial stability of every person in Southwest Virginia because they are the building blocks for a good quality of life.
