Relay for Life
 
Relay for Life began in Tacoma ,Washington, in May 1985, when Dr. Gordon Klatt walked and ran around a track for 24 hours, raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. In 2025, 244 Relay for Life events occurred on college and high school campuses around the world raising $5,523,767. While every event is unique, all spend their school year supporting the same mission, which is to honor and remember loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate cancer survivors and caregivers.

Imagination Library of Montgomery County, VA
 
As a local partner of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, we enroll children under five to receive absolutely free books each month until they turn five. Over 27,000 books have been mailed. Books are high quality and age-appropriate The goal is to ignite a love of books and reading.during a time of rapid brain development. Exposure to books and reading is important to develop pre-literacy skills. We are an all-volunteer, minimal overhead organization and raise money to pay for the books.

Serving qualified residents of Blacksburg and McCoy, the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry is a joint ministry of over twenty-five faith-based communities in Blacksburg. We are also supported by individuals, organizations, and clubs that are members of our community.

As a nonprofit that relies on fundraising, we’re working to create unique and fun experiences for you. With us, a night out isn’t just entertaining; it benefits your community. Profits raised from these events will go directly to local animal rescue groups, to help with the expenses incurred from feeding, sheltering and providing medical care to animals in need.
 
New River Community Action, To Our House
 
NRCA’s To Our House (TOH) is a low-barrier program offering overnight shelter, food, and compassionate support to unhoused individuals during the winter months (November to March). TOH partners with the faith-based community, civic groups, and other organizations to provide shelter space, meals, and encouragement to those participating. TOH staff offer case management to help guests move toward housing stability.
 
Montgomery County Friends of Animal Care and Control
 
Our mission is to help the MCACAC by providing financial support for medications, surgeries, and micro-chipping of their animals. We also support the Montgomery County community by sponsoring senior animal adoptions, and through our spay/neuter voucher program. MCFACC is an animal loving group of volunteers, dedicated to saving and improving the lives of homeless animals in Montgomery County, VA.
 
Literacy NRV
 
Our mission is to foster, support, advocate for, and instruct adults in the New River Valley of Virginia who seek opportunities to achieve greater independence through literacy.
Services are provided to help adults improve basic skills to achieve personal, employment, and civic goals. We provide instruction in reading, writing, math, and GED preparation; English for Speakers of Other Languages and U.S. Citizenship test preparation; digital literacy; financial literacy; and family literacy.

Inmate Family Assistance of the New River Valley
 
Inmate Family Assistance of the NRV assists families of inmates at the Montgomery County Jail fund their incarcerated loved ones' telephone and commissary accounts so that they can stay in touch. This alleviates the financial burden on the family and enables the family and inmate to stay in touch with each other which is important for maintaining familial bonds and to reduce recidivism.
 
Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley, Inc.
 
Founded in 1977, the Women's Resource Center of the New River Valley, Inc. is a non-profit human service agency whose mission is to implement individual and social change for a violence-free community in the New River Valley region of Virginia by providing programs and services to adults and children who have experienced sexual and domestic violence, and by providing education, training, and prevention programming to the public and to allied professionals.
 
MCEAP Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Program
 
MCEAP's mission is to assist Montgomery County residents in maintaining their households and restoring their self-sufficiency. This can be achieved by serving the immediate, emergency, and temporary needs of low-income, unemployed, elderly or handicapped individuals and families.
 
Blacksburg Refugee Partnership, Inc.
 
Blacksburg Refugee Partnership (BRP), founded in 2016, supports refugee resettlement in Blacksburg, welcoming 21 families from countries like Syria and Afghanistan. BRP offers assistance with housing, education, employment, healthcare, financial literacy, and cultural orientation. Its goal is to empower refugees to achieve long-term independence while enriching the local community. Volunteers, vital to its mission, undergo training and background checks. Ride-A-Rescue
 
At Ride-A-Rescue, we believe in second chances, for horses and for the people who love them. Our fully volunteer-run program is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming horses that have faced abandonment, neglect, or abuse. Many of the horses in our care go on to become trusted trail partners, lesson horses, and ambassadors at local events- helping not only to heal themselves but to fund the ongoing care of others still in recovery by living the motto of "Save a horse, Ride-A-Rescue"

Flying Changes Virginia, LLC is a 501c3 that provides Equine Assisted Services for individuals, families, groups, and organizations. Our programs and services utilize credentialed and licensed mental health clinicians to provide psychotherapy and equine learning for youth, teens, adults, and seniors.
 
 
 
New River Family Shelter (NRFS)
 
NRFS educates anyone experiencing a housing crisis on tenant/landlord rights and responsibilities and refers them to needed services. Homeless families with children in the NRV are eligible for NRFS case management services, and, as space is available, emergency shelter. The agency has the capacity to temporarily house five families consecutively and, while sheltered, barriers to housing are addressed and permanent options are identified.
 
Blacksburg Community Band
 
The Blacksburg Community Band was founded in 1989 to give local musicians a way to rekindle, maintain or improve their musical proficiency in a large ensemble – in 2025 we have 104 musicians! There are no dues or fees to join and musicians are never paid, so all donations raised are crucial to cover the cost of music, band-owned instruments and operating expenses. We rehearse weekly and perform 4-5 free public concerts every year to share our love of music with the New River Valley community!
 
Northside Presbyterian Church Monday Night Suppers
 
Northside Presbyterian Church has a mission to feed hungry people in Blacksburg. Every Monday night starting at 6 p.m., anyone who pulls into the parking lot can pick up to-go meals for themselves and their family. Each meal has an entrée, a side or salad, a fruit cup, and cookies. Members of the church prepare the meals, pack them in containers, and deliver them to each vehicle as they pull up. We don't ask for verification of need; we are just feeding the hungry.
 
Hope To Walk
 
Hope To Walk designs, creates, and provides low-cost prosthetic legs to amputees in developing nations who would otherwise never be able to afford a prosthetic and have the ability to walk and work again. Not only are our prosthetics affordable, they can be fitted in a few hours, giving same day service. We have also developed prosthetic training programs to train international communities to set up Hope To Walk clinics and help themselves.

Project Linus, New River Valley-Radford Chapter
 
The New River Valley-Radford chapter of Project Linus provides new blankets for children (infants to teens) in Radford City, Montgomery, Floyd, Giles, and Pulaski counties in Virginia. Project Linus is a volunteer non-profit organization with a two-fold mission: FIRST, to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children through the gifts of new, handmade blankets. SECOND, to provide rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups in local communities.

One of the few local agencies that provides social activities and intaractive support to persons with ID in our community. All of our funding is from local supporters.

The Montgomery Museum of Art & History has a mission to connect and engage the community through the arts and the preservation and interpretation of local and regional history via local history and genealogy research materials; developing history exhibitions from a collection of over 3,000 historic artifacts; exhibiting the work of regional artists; providing a garden of native and pollinator plants; and engaging the community in classes, programs, and events.
 
Live Work Eat Grow
 
The mission of Live, Work, Eat, Grow is to cultivate vibrant communities. We serve the NRV by operating Millstone Kitchen, a commercial kitchen for rent by small businesses. We steward several community gardens, offering families a place to grow their own food and build community. Through our Millstone Meals program, we provide fresh or fresh-frozen meals to seniors and low income families. We are locally funded and rely on volunteer support and community investment.

New River Community Action, Housing Counseling (Housing Programs Providing Financial Assistance)
 
NRCA's Rapid Rehousing supports clients who meet the HUD definition of literally homeless to obtain stable, permanent housing through case management and short to medium term financial assistance. NRCA's Prevention Program is designed to prevent individuals and households from moving into emergency shelter or entering the homeless system. Households meeting income requirements and in jeopardy of eviction may be eligible for case management and short to medium-term financial assistance.
