I guess in your case it boils down to two things. Opportunity cost... Is what you gain bigger than what you loose. And secondly principles... If it fundamentally goes against everything you believe in than go for it...

Probably largely correct, but leaning toward paranoid interpretation. Quitting FB is up to Gerd. But it is still possible to avoid, or at least be aware of, the manipulations and social deficiencies of FB. As for its power... that horse bolted too lo

The medium is in need of thoughtful, intelligent voices to counterpoint the idiocy and the cynical profit-driven manipulation. Even if it's creating an inhuman gestalt Overculture, wise voices still need to be represented within that terrible amalgam

People have different levels of comfort with what and how they share things and consume media. There are alternative networks out there, but it's hard to move away from where everyone else is...

You are completely correct with your analysis. But ... in my opinion it is important to reduce stupid fb usability and to qualify people how to use this sort of system for projects, that we nee worldwide.

Stay on Facebook if you feel you get something out of it. I would not miss you on Facebook since I like getting your newsletter and actually read what you say in it. I also pass on your links and comments but do so outside of FB

POints are valid, but Facebook is a great tool! we can use how to use it........and the odds of what they do with my data is well compensated by the benefits of being in touch with people I want and I choose...

I totally agree with you, Gerd. I've followed you from twitter, then Facebook appears on our lives. But I think you may consider stay on Facebook just for research purposes. Your text above is brilliant and the world needs someone to explain just as

I've been on FaceBook since 1st month of existence. I have NEVER posted anything about myself...no activities, food, travel, etc. I've Liked some books, movies & musical artists. In the last 2 years I don't even log into FB at all...I post to it daily externally from apps & web sharing tools. I only post news & articles about futures, science, education, AI, astronomy, exobiology and similar topics. I view FB as a (admittedly somewhat limited) tool to inform, educate & inspire my 500+ "friends". Sort of an intermittent, short-form blog. I'm also thinking of escaping FB for all the same reasons you posit.

I actually prefer the newsletters to Facebook or Linked In posts because I can file them away to look at when I have time (e.g. when I have 10 minutes to kill before an appointment). When I use LI or FB links I find myself killing time when I should be doing something more useful. My impression is that FB is reaching a peak and may not by so strong in another few years. It is not really someplace where I want to share things.

Hey Gerd, In my opinion you should use facebook as you want and not let facebook control you. I am an active facebook user because I like to see what my friends are doing and it's also a simple way to collect information from different websites and see them in one feed. And in that feed I very much like to read your articles too, so you if I may be a little selfish, you should not leave facebook. Just use it to share your amazing insights! (just fyi I also signed up for your newsletter, but in my opinion newsletters are heavy and I tend to read more your articles if they come one by one rather than as a big package) :)
